It reminds me that several years ago one of my children had a question posed on a college application: “What reminds you of home?” The question was derived simply to test his ability to think and write efficiently, but the response to me was surprising. While he had only 500 words in which to answer this question, I was caught off guard by the incredibly concise response, “the smell of bacon cooking.” He went on to explain that the smell of frying pork products meant that someone loved him – it was a simple act repeated over and over in our home that meant all was well. In looking back, I realized that when things get crazy or nothing is going as planned, the first thing that is abandoned is making a home cooked breakfast – so for him, that smell sent the “all clear” message wafting up the stairs.
To each person, the idea of home sparks different memories or dreams or aspirations. Home may be where you hope to bring a new wife or husband, where you hope to raise your children, or where you hope to live out your dream retirement. It may be a safe space in a hectic world or a peaceful escape from the craziness of professional life. While it is not often that we pause in our office for deep reflection due to the high paced environment of real estate, on occasion it is important to stop and think about the impact we have on helping people create their own “home.” So over then next few weeks, we will have different agents chime in on their thoughts about “home.” Hopefully they will be more insightful than “bacon” but to my family, we’ll stick with crunchy pork and hot eggs to signify that you are truly home.
