Best Back Yard - Stuart Avenue the Fan
Anytime Bobby + April collaborate with Natural Art Landscaping to design a yard for a city house, they focus on minimal upkeep, but this one stands out because of the special raised garden beds. A carved-out back area includes a parking space, a stone patio, a few shrubs and two elegant, raised beds for what principal broker April Straus jokingly calls a “sustenance garden.” “It’s designed to grow tomatoes, basil, just the things you’d like to walk out of your kitchen and grab when you’re making dinner,” she said. “The flower beds and the shrubs add privacy and the patio is absolutely gorgeous, but there’s still almost no regular maintenance.”
“I’m unlike many of my clients in that I don’t like an open kitchen,” Straus said. “This one is perfect. It’s a modified galley. One end has an open peninsula where you can entertain, but there’s also an end that’s closed, so if you wanted to make a mess on the counters, you could. It’s the best of both worlds.”
Bobby + April were designing this house to move into, but as sometimes happens when you’re in the business, it sold instead! The entire first floor is designed for entertaining. Spacious rooms and a patio flow easily into one another for grand parties. The second floor is a giant master suite with a bedroom, bathroom, 14-by-14-foot closet with an island in the middle and den. Then, the third floor features two additional bedrooms and a bathroom.
Bobby + April’s front porch is elevated 10 feet off the ground and tucked away behind greenery. “We can see the street, but no one can see us,” Straus said. “We can decide if we feel like waving hello to people or just relaxing privately. It also gets really nice morning shade and afternoon sun.”
When Bobby + April designed this master bedroom as part of an addition to the original house, they chose a medium-size room but added a full-size screened-in porch. “I just love the idea of having a porch right off the bedroom,” Straus said.
